Day 01: Greater Williamsburg Area, Virginia

Travel to Historic Jamestowne, the location of America’s first permanent English settlement. There, you will learn more about this historic site’s importance in America’s story and life in Virginia in the early 1600s. Visit the archaeological museum and talk to archaeologists as they pull artifacts from the ground at this working site, or take a walking tour with a costumed living history character. At nearby Jamestown Settlement, you can see replicas of the colonists’ fort, three sailing ships, and a Powhatan Indian village. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many popular restaurants located on the Williamsburg Tasting Trail and then stop by the Williamsburg Winery for a taste of the region’s award-winning wine.Continue your exploration of the area’s history at Yorktown Battlefield, the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War,to see the spot where General George Washington besieged the British Army, alongside allied American and French forces. Visit Colonial Williamsburg, the world’s largest living-history museum, and experience life in Virginia during the 18th century in an up-close and immersive way. Stroll the historic streets filled with dozens of historic landmarks and sites, guided by staff dressed in period-themed clothing. You will also get to participate in many hands-on activities, take guided tours of original 18th-century buildings, and explore a renowned collection of folk art.

End your day with a restful and relaxing evening at the Williamsburg Inn located in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg.

Day 02: Richmond, Virginia

Located along the mighty James River, the state capital of Richmond combines big-city amenities with warm, Southern charm. Bring your appetite, because Richmond is known for its abundant array of delicious restaurants and a booming selection of craft breweries, in addition to its historically significant cultural attractions, a vibrant arts scene, and numerous options for shopping. Start your Richmond visit with a Segway tour of some of the city’s most notable landmarks. Discover sites filled with Civil War history, enjoy breathtaking views of the James River, and roll by the Virginia State Capitol, which was designed by Thomas Jefferson, the nation’s third President. Not into Segways? No problem! You can also explore the city by trolley, bike, or walking tours. Get some lunch at ZZQ, a barbeque joint offering up some of the best smoked meats around, and then dive into Richmond’s craft beer scene. Richmond’s craft breweries have been receiving many prestigious accolades and the region is now home to more than 30 breweries – with even more on the way. Discover the Richmond Beer Trail and pick a few options to get a nice sampling of some of the area’s most delicious suds. Now it’s time to shop! Head to the Carytown Shopping District and explore nine blocks of this eclectic Richmond shopping district, filled with unique shops, locally-owned restaurants, and cafés. Short Pump Town Center features dozens of larger retail stores, plus dining and snacking options. After you shop until you drop, freshen up, and prepare to delight your taste buds with some of the area’s superb culinary options. In downtown Richmond, you will have your pick of many popular choices such as L’opossum, Julep’s, Millie’s Diner, or the Boathouse at Rocketts Landing, for beautiful waterfront views along the James River. 

Lodging options abound in the Richmond area. From the inexpensive, to historic boutique hotels, to luxurious properties, there’s no shortage of places to refuel and rest up. 


Day 03: Richmond, Virginia, then depart for Northern Virginia

Start day three by enjoying the impressive Richmond arts scene. Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and discover 33,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of world history. This museum consistently ranks as one of the top comprehensive art museums in the United States – and admission is free. To experience art with a modern flair, stop by the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Virginia Commonwealth University. Depart for Dulles International Airport to begin your journey home. Leave time for some last-minute shopping at the Leesburg Premium Corner Outlets or make a stop at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum – a must-see attraction for aviation enthusiasts. Depart with plenty of fond memories and souvenirs from your unforgettable trip to Virginia.
